First Team Match Report - South West Week
Venue - East Devon Golf Club
June 9th to 14th 2024
2024 is the Centenary of the South West Counties Golf Association and on this occasion the Event was hosted by Devon at East Devon Golf Club.
The Course was set up to be firm and fast running with slick greens that were to be prove a challenge in the strong winds that prevailed through the Week.
The team had already seen the Course earlier in the year, but also had the benefit of the practice day with Martyn Thompson where plans for the holes and the approach to matches were agreed.
All matches are played with 8 team members playing singles in the morning and foursomes in the afternoon. Points are awarded with 1 for each singles match and 1.5 for each foursomes. On each day, foursomes became key.
June 9th - Day 1
Dorset took on the hosts, Devon, on the first day. We had recently come a close second to them at the Isle of Purbeck and were looking to turn round the result.
A good morning performance left Dorset 5 -3 down at lunch with wins from Oscar Hein and Sam Roles and half points from Jake Moore and Joe Turner.
The afternoon foursomes did not go Dorset's way, with a win achieved by Tom Kollberg and Joe Turner. The three other matches went to Devon.
Devon's local knowledge prevailed, but the days matches had been closely fought.
June 10th - Day 2
The match was against Somerset.
Dorset played well in the morning with wins from Lee James, Jake Moore and Jenson Bull. Tom Kollberg and Tom peacock secured halves. We went into lunch at 4 -4 with all to play for in the foursomes.
A win for Tom Peacock and Andy Simpson and a half from Joe Turner and Tom Kollberg was not enough to secure a win. We lost the foursomes 2.25 v's 3.75 leading to an overall narrow loss 6.25 v's 7.75.
Another disappointing day with good golf not translating into an overall win.
June 11th - Day 3 - SW Amateur Championship.
Today was the individual and team event played over 36 holes. 6 golfers were nominated at the start of the day, with all 6 scores counting for the overall team prize. The winners would represent the SW region the national Championship.
The day was dominated by Gloucestershire who had the individual winner, Nick Day and the team championship.
Dorset's leading players were Sam Roles (145) and Tom Bastow (148)
An unfortunate injury for one of the Dorset team meant we could not complete the day and came 6th overall.
June 12th - Day 4
The match was against Gloucestershire.
Another good performance in the singles with wins from Lee James, Oscar Hein and Tom Bastow. Zac Mudford secured a half. This left us 3.5 v's 4.5 with all to play for again.
Unfortunately, the same pattern returned in the foursomes with Dorset only winning one match through Lee James and Tom Kollberg.
An overall loss of 5 -9. As with other games our foursomes performance did not match the singles.
June 13th - Day 5
The match was against Wiltshire.
The weather forecast meant that the matches were reduced to 4 singles and 2 foursomes.
Zac Mudford won a half point and with remaining singles going against us.
The foursomes were very tight, and we thought we were going to achieve a result. Tom Peacock and Andy Simpson won their match but in tight decider Joe Turner and Tom Kollberg won a half leaving us with another loss, 2.75 v's 4.25.
June 14th - Day 6
The match was against Cornwall.
A win today would leave us in 5th place and avoid the wooden spoon.
The games did not go our way and at the end of a long and difficult week we lost 2 - 12. Our points came from Nick Hopwood and Jenson Bull in their singles wins
Overall
A disappointing week with no wins as a team. We could not get games over the line on too many occasions despite fine play at times. The hosts, Devon won the overall match play enjoying their home course advantage and a strong team.
SW Week is a very tough challenge with many pressures on the players. We have learned much this week and continue the remaining season looking to compete well in the remaining 5 County games.
